Meet nutritionist Jo Atkinson

1. Why work with kids and stressed out mums?

As mums, we often take on the main role of deciding what and how our family eats. We do the research, we learn or develop the skills, we do the trial and error. We also do the bulk of the worrying…

I chose to study nutrition after I saw the changes in my own family's health once I changed the way we ate. Simple, sustainable changes made a huge difference to how often we got sick, how well we slept, and how I was able to get my anxiety under control.

From there, I knew I wanted to help other families do the same thing.

2. Favourite way to start your day?

Pilates. I do pilates at 6 am three mornings a week and it always sets me up for a great day.

3. Drink of choice?

A really good coffee. I only have 1 coffee a day and I really enjoy it. Other than that, I drink plenty of filtered water.

4. Favourite food?

Without a doubt, avocados. They are so versatile and packed with essential nutrients. You can even turn them into chocolate mousse!!! What's not to love 💚

5. Where will we find you when you’re not in the clinic?

Hanging out with my family and our dog. We live in the beautiful Perth hills where we are surrounded by nature (including our own yard!). When I'm in nature, I am happy.

6. What’s your go-to weeknight meal?

I love a good shepherd's pie. It was a favourite for me growing up and it's a great meal to throw in a heap of veggies. It’s also a great one to make two of and freeze one for another night.

7. Favourite travel destination (for when we get there!)?

South West WA. The forest, the ocean and great food.

8. What are you reading right now?

I have 6 different books on the go right now!
- The Postnatal Depletion Cure by Dr Oscar Serrallach
- Newborn Mothers by Julia Jones
- Hormone Repair Manual by Lara Briden
- Anxious Mums by Dr Jodie Richardson
- Change Your Thinking to Change Your Life by Kate James
- Carry On Warrior by Glennon Doyle

9. If you could prescribe any tip/dietary/lifestyle recommendation to parents about their child’s health, what would it be?

Help your child to build a positive relationship with food. This might mean looking at your own relationship with food and being aware of any triggers you have as this can have a massive impact on your child's relationship with food and their body and ultimately, their health.

Our kids are always seeking connection with us - that goes from toddlers to teenagers (it’s true, they do). So planning meals and cooking together, going to a farmers market, having picnics outside or on your lounge room floor are all ways you can connect with your kids in a positive way around food.

Try to make space for this in your week, knowing that it will likely take a little more time (and cleaning up!).
